Everything matters. No action or breath can be taken without everything in existence being affected. Nothing can exist without impacting everything else that exists, every single millisecond.
The biased eye of the beholder
Time and value are inextricably linked to the perspective of the observer. Humans, with their relatively short lifespans, measure time in terms of days, years, and decades. However, celestial bodies such as stars and galaxies have lifetimes that are measured in billions of years. The events that occur during a human lifetime may be significant to us, but they would be meaningless to an eternal being. Conversely, the fleeting experiences of a mayfly would seem insignificant to us, yet to the mayfly, they are everything. In a universe where objective meaning is absent, everything takes on significance simply because it is a part of the tapestry of existence. Every event, no matter how small or fleeting, contributes to the fabric of reality and shapes the course of the universe.

The nonimpact nonsense
The universe is a jigsaw puzzle of infinite complexity, a dance of atoms and particles that weave together to create the fabric of reality. It’s easy to believe that our actions and thoughts are insignificant in the grand scheme of things, that our existence is but a mere blip on the radar of time. It’s easy to underestimate the subtle butterfly effect of our individual existence on the process of reality creation. We often fall into the trap of assuming that our impact must be blatantly observable for it to have occurred. But the truth is, every action, no matter how small, has a ripple effect that can be felt throughout the entire universe.
Meaning, a way out…or deeper still
The search for meaning is a fundamental human need, one that arises from our desire to understand our place in the world. The quest for subjective meaning, that which is related to our personal desires and needs, can be a driving force in our lives. It motivates us to pursue our passions, to create and innovate, and to strive for a better future. However, the search for a philosophical meaning, one that seeks to understand the nature of existence itself, is an unfathomably complex subject, one that may be beyond the limits of human comprehension.
As we grow up, we become increasingly aware of the lack of joy and unmet needs in our adult lives, which can lead to a sense of existential despair as we project the filter created by our various childhood traumas onto reality. A content person may not ponder the notion of meaning as readily as someone who is desperate for answers. However, it is precisely the purpose of suffering, darkness, and desperation to be the catalysts for meaning-creation. Without these difficult experiences, there would be no push toward understanding.
Despite this, the search for meaning serves an important purpose in our social and psychological development. It gives us a sense of purpose, helps us to feel connected to others and the world around us, and provides a framework for making sense of our experiences. Yet, we must be careful not to conflate our personal values with inherent worth. We should learn to appreciate the significance of everything in its own way, regardless of its value to us personally.
Perhaps, the need for meaning is unique to humans, as our consciousness and comprehension are limited compared to hypothetical higher-dimensional beings with a capacity to understand so deeply that the need to feel emotion and ascribe meaning would be redundant. Yet, this search for meaning is what drives us to understand the world around us and to push the boundaries of what we know. In the end, it is the journey that matters, and the search for meaning is a part of that journey. By learning to appreciate the significance of everything in its own way, we can find fulfillment and purpose in our lives, and come to understand our place in the universe.
The meaning of meaninglessness
In essence, we are both nothing and everything at the same time, and we don’t have to prove anything to anyone to justify our existence.
Our lives are but fleeting moments in the grand scheme of the cosmos, yet within these moments, we hold infinite possibilities. We are mere motion blur in the vast expanse of time, yet we contain entire worlds within us. We do not have to search for meaning in the world outside of ourselves, for we are already a vital part of it all. We do not have to prove our worth to anyone, nor do we need to justify our existence.
The very fact that we are here, breathing and experiencing this world, should be enough. We are the universe experiencing itself, and that alone is a wondrous and (perhaps) meaningful feat.
